Last week I had the opportunity to visit Loddon-Middleton Prison in Castlemaine. It was great to have the chance to meet with corrections staff and prisoners who are part of the Vocational Education and Training (VET) Centre of Excellence program. A program striving to provide prisoners with the opportunity to get civil construction licenses and ticket, helping to develop their skills.

Many that have used the program have been able to put themselves on a pathway that allows them to land a job in the construction sector, among other sectors.

The Victorian Budget 2022/23 allowed for $37 million over a 3-year period that is directly to aid in breaking down barriers to paid jobs when a prisoner is released.

The program leads to stable income and independence, being key factors in reducing the risk of reoffending.
